CIIR at the G8

CIIR at the G8

The MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign really is a unique mobilisation of unprecedented proportions. The amount of media coverage over the past few weeks has been fantastic. Most people have now heard of the campaign and its three key messages of trade justice, drop the debt and more and better aid. It remains to be seen how much the G8 will really heed this, particularly with reports of US reluctance to move on a range of development issues.

I suppose one of the worries is that this may just be a passing fashion - the flavour of the month, or of the year in this case - and that people and the media will then move on to something else, either disillusioned because of the G8's refusal to take action, or believing that the problem has been solved.

But whatever the case, this is the most amazing campaign I've ever been part of. The level of enthusiasm and dedication of people is amazing. Today promises to be a great day!
